Warner Bros. has reportedly hired its director for The LEGO Movie’s sequel. While the film will not be helmed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie will be directed by Chris McKay, who did work on the first film.
The news was first reported by Deadline, which notes that McKay was the animation co-director on LEGO. Lord and Miller are still onboard to produce, along with Courtenay Valenti overseeing the film for the studio. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are co-producing.
Warner Bros. is moving quickly to get the sequel going in order to build on the success of the first film. The moment the film started getting good reviews, the studio began building the sequel. That move has paid off, as the movie has already grossed $362.7 million since it was released last month.
Deadline notes that the studio still hasn’t figured out what direction to go with the sequel. They could introduce some new ones, including the Ninjago characters in order to get a spin-off film to start.
Although McKay hasn’t directed a feature, he has plenty of TV experience and won an Emmy for his Robot Chicken work.
