92-year-old man gets three-word obituary that reads ‘I am dead’

A 92-year-old Swedish man’s request was granted when he died last week and got a short and simple three-word obituary that read “I am dead.”

According to The Local, Stig Kernell instructed a funeral home in Tranås, Sweden to publish the three words upon his death and include his name and the date he died.

Sverige Radio reported that when it occurred to Kernell that he did not want to make a big deal out of his own passing he went and spoke with the undertaker about having a modest obit published.

The brief and factual message ran in Saturday's newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, but the length of the obit captured national and international headlines.

Kernell’s family felt that the swift write-up was appropriate, however, after all the attention his children posted a longer piece about their father’s life.

"He was a special man with a lot of humor and a twinkle in his eye,” his son Lars-Ake Kernell said. “He was crass, too, and that has helped us deal with our loss, since he did not fear death in the least.”
