A&E is moving ahead with an American adaptation of the acclaimed French series The Returned. The project, which will be run by Bates Motel’s Carlton Cuse and True Blood’s Raelle Tucker, has been ordered straight-to-series.
The duo will write and executive produce the series. A+E Studios and FremantleMedia North America are producing and production will start this summer, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
The Returned is based on a French series, which has won an International Emmy and was just renewed for a second season. It centers on a small town where people who have been dead for years suddenly start reappearing. The families of those thought missing have to grapple with the discovery. The film was directed by Robin Campillo and the original series was developed by Fabrice Gobert. It airs on Sundance in the U.S.
“The Returned has the potential to be one of the most compelling drama series on cable, thanks to phenomenal scripts written by Carlton and Raelle,” A&E general manager David McKillop said in a statement, notes Deadline.
Cuse, who worked on Lost with Damon Lindelof, will have three shows on the air, including two on A&E. His Bates Motel is currently in its second season and FX is about to air The Strain, which he worked on with Guillermo Del Toro. He has been attached to The Returned since September 2013.
A&E only has two original shows now - Bates and Longmire. It saw Those Who Kill fail after two episodes. That show was cancelled and will be airing on the Lifetime Movie Channel.
