The body of a missing Alaska man was found in his home after he was missing for a year.

Samuel E. McAlpine, 37, told his mother he was leaving for a date March 17 of last year and was not heard from again. He was reported missing 12 days later. CNN reports that McAlpine was found in his home Monday.

Police stated that there were renters in the home, but they had no idea the body was there. The renters, however, were members of the military, and it is suspected that they didn’t spend much time at the home.

The body was found when McAlpine’s now ex-wife, Christine, came to the apartment to clean and found him under the stairs in a storage area.

According to the Alaska Dispatch, McAlpine’s body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s office to have an autopsy done to determine the official cause of death.

Police believe that there was no foul play, and that drugs and alcohol may be involved.
