Benedict Cumberbatch is becoming royal for his next role. Cumberbatch will be playing Richard III in an upcoming film that will be shown on BBC. Neal Street Productions’ will be behind the upcoming project.

Cumberbatch will be working with Dominic Cooke, who has singed on to direct the film. Cooke is known for being the artistic director of the Royal Court Theater for the past six years, Variety reported. The Sherlock actor spoke about his excitement for the project. "I can’t wait to work with Dominic Cooke again to bring this complex, funny and dangerous character to life," said Cumberbatch.

"Richard III" is a part of a well known series of Shakespeare plays, this also includes "Henry VI" in two parts.

The plays will be adapted for the screen by Ben Power, who is the associate director of the National Theater.

Time added that the film will be produced by Sam Mendes.

The upcoming films will air on BBC Two.
