At the Boston Marathon, approximately 36,000 runners began the race today with increased security in effect.
Marathoners are braving the range of emotions after last year’s tragedy. Katie O'Donnell told the Associated Press. "I think I'm going to start crying at the starting line, and I'm not sure I'll stop until I cross the finish line." O’Donnell was stopped less than a mile before completing the race last year.
A total of 35,755 athletes registered to compete in 2014. Race organizers made certain that runners could participate who were still on the course last year when explosions horrified spectators and killed three people and injured 260 more.
Increased security measures are in place today. Spectators waited for bags to be checked this morning, as they cheered for Boston police at the 118th anniversary of the race, according to Reuters. Buses with the message "Boston Strong" brought athletes to the starting line this year.
Approximately 1,600 people gathered to remember Sean Collier who was allegedly killed by Boston Marathon suspects last year.
