The Boy Scouts of America have revoked the charter of a Seattle church after they discovered the church let an openly adult continue to lead a troop.
The Rainier Beach United Methodist Church was informed by the BSA that the church was no longer allowed to host any Boy Scout troops due to its continued support of Geoff McGrath, reports NBC News.
Spokesperson Deron Smith said in an email, "Because the church no longer agrees to the terms of the BSA chartered organization agreement, which includes following BSA policies, it is no longer authorized to offer the Scouting program."
Rev. Monica Corsaro admits the decision by the BSA didn't surprise the church but noted that they were not consulted either. She said, "It seems to me that when you are in a dispute with a partner you try to work it out with the partner. It's very clear we're not viewed as an equal partner."
With the church now banned by the BSA, a local community center agreed to host the troop, according to a top BSA leader.
As previously reported, the BSA made the announcement at the end of March that they were stripping McGrath of his position in the Boy Scouts due to being openly gay. They claimed he was "deliberately injecting" his sexuality into the Scouts.
He claimed that the Boy Scouts were aware and OK with him supporting gay rights and the gay community, something the BSA has since denied, saying they only were made aware contacted about a story to be written about McGrath.
