Britain’s youngest parents gave birth to their first child earlier this month. The father is 13-years-old and the mother is only 12. The girl’s father is completely supportive of his daughter and the baby.
The couple’s story was first reported last week by The Sun and they have not been identified. They have the lowest combined age - 23 - of any British parents in history, according to Metro. A family source told The Sun that the couple is “totally in love” and that they have been together over a year.
The girl became pregnant when she was 11 and still in primary school. Still, the baby’s grandparents are being fully supportive.
“It’s a very difficult situation because the parents are both so young – but their families are right behind them,” a source told The Sun. “The baby’s mum and dad have been in a relationship for more than year, so this isn’t a fleeting romance. They intend to stick together and bring their daughter up together.”
According to The Daily Mail, a man who claimed to be the girl’s father spoke with a local radio station and said that he did not know she was expecting until a month ago. The couple somehow managed to get away together and did so a month before the baby was born.
“If they do things behind their parents back that's something we're never going to be able to find out,” the girl’s father said. “We only found that she was actually pregnant a month ago. For us what can you do?”
The Huffington Post notes that the baby’s grandfather also spoke with The Evening Standard and said that he’s “proud” and “I’d rather she had a kid than do drugs.”
The couple does plan on raising the child, whose gender was not revealed.
