A California high school teacher has been arrested for carrying on a relationship with a student for over a year.
According to CBS San Francisco, Leon Chang, 27, turned himself in to police following an investigation that lasted several months. The investigation determined Chang had been in a relationship with a now senior at San Leandro High School.
Chang and the unnamed student were able to keep their relationship under wraps until another teacher spotted the two and reported their actions to the proper authorities.
Authorities have said they were able to find forensic evidence that determined there had been an ongoing sexual relationship between Chang and the student.
"She's a senior, and it's been going on since junior year. One of the teachers caught them in the act and reported it to the administration,” student Ramon Cuevas told KTVU."
Chang taught math at San Leandro High School for six years before this incident and individuals in the district were shocked by his actions.
"It just all went to waste but he was a great teacher. I loved him, I actually loved him as a teacher,” Cuevas told KTVU.
The San Leandro Unified School District has reportedly suspended Chang without pay and ordered him not to return to work or be on district property.
Chang faces charges of statutory rape and contacting a minor for lewd purposes. He has been released on bail.
