A mother is facing murder charges after allegedly stabbing her 7-month-old son to death in a Northern California park.
Ashley Newton, 23, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday after being found covered in blood and holding her dead baby while walking in Del Valle Regional Park, reports Mercury News.
East Bay Regional Park District police received a call at approximately 10:30 a.m. Saturday about a collision at the dead-end of Arroyo Road.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they found a damaged Honda Civic with nothing besides an empty car seat in the back of the car. After investigating further, they came into contact with Newton, who walked towards them holding her baby who had been stabbed multiple times.
“Officers on the scene at the time attempted to resuscitate the child and were unsuccessful,” East Bay Regional Park District Police Chief Timothy Anderson said, according to The Chicago Tribune.
The motives of Newton, who suffers from depression, are still unknown.
“This kind of thing rarely happens in our jurisdiction," Anderson said. "This is an extremely shocking case for us.”
Newton remains in jail with no possibility of bond and will appear in court on Tuesday.
