A Milford, Conn. high school student was stabbed by another student Friday morning, police said. The girl was stabbed by a boy whose invitation to the junior prom she apparently rejected.

The incident took place at the Jonathan Law High School and students were dismissed at around 9:15 a.m., reports News 12. Students told the station that the boy tried to choke the girl at first as the school day began. However, he then tried to stab her.

A spokesman for Bridgeport Hospital confirmed to Reuters that the girl was taken there for treatment. NBC Connecticut reports that officials did say at a press conference that the girl has died.

Members of the Milford Police Department did rush to the school, but they have confirmed that the building is safe. It was put under lockdown before the students were dismissed.

“There was blood on her neck. It was awful,” Sam Garcia, 16, told Reuters. “I saw the girl lying on the stretcher when they took her out.”

The school had planned on holding the junior prom tonight. NBC Connecticut now reports that it has been postponed. Police also said that the boy, 16, is in custody.
