Dominique Ansel, the baker whose cronut creation set off a frenzy in New York last year, was finally able to reopen his SoHo bakery on Tuesday. The bakery was closed by the city’s Health Department over the weekend after video of mice in the bakery surfaced last week.
Gothamist posted a video showing a mouse scampering around on the floor. According to ABC News, the Health Department then shut the bakery down for “evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.”
The French-born baker was actually supposed to reopen the barkery on Monday, notes The New York Daily News. So, cronut fans had to wait just one more day before getting their treat, a cross between a croissant and a donut.
The bakery did open up for business again on Tuesday, with Ansel writing a letter to his fans on Facebook.
“In the past year, we have woken up daily knowing that our success has made us vulnerable to more malicious attacks than any small, one-shop business should ever have to suffer,” Ansel wrote. “But we refuse to believe that we live in a world where success turns people into targets of spite and contempt.”
He concluded with a quote from Rocky. “In the words of Rocky Balboa – whose theme song has been playing on our radio all weekend long while we worked to deliver everything that was required of us and more – ‘getting hit and keep moving forward…that’s how winning is done!’” he wrote.
