Democratic National Committee invites 15 cities to bid for 2016 convention

The Democratic National Committee has invited 15 cities from all parts of the country to bid for the party’s 2016 convention, when it will officially pick its nominee for the White House.

The DNC request for proposal (RFP) was sent to the cities late Monday, reports CNN. Mayors for the cities have to submit their bids by June 6.

Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City are the 15 cities that received the RFPs.

While hosting the event could cost a city $60 million, it does bring extra attention to the location and could triple the investment, notes CNN.

Both Columbus and Cleveland were among the original eight finalists for the Republican National Convention, as was Las Vegas and Phoenix. According to Politico, the GOP did whittle its choices down to six, eliminating both Columbus and Phoenix. Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver and Kansas City are also in the running for the Republican convention.

The DNC is expected to announce its pick for the convention host later this year or in early 2015. The Republicans will likely announce their pick this summer or in the fall.
