Dorothy Mitchum, actor Robert Mitchum’s widow, dies at 93

Dorothy Spence Mitchum, the widow of legendary Hollywood actor Robert Mitchum, has died Saturday at age 93. The were childhood sweethearts and were married for 57 years until his death in 1997.

Publicist Jane Ayer told The Hollywood Reporter that Mitchum died peacefully at the Serenity House hospice in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Mitchum was just 14 when she met Robert Mitchum, who was two years older than she, and the two married in 1940, notes TheWrap. She then went to Hollywood with her husband, who would go on to become one of the most iconic tough guys in the business. His films include The Night of the Hunter, Cape Fear, Ryan’s Daughter and The Friends of Eddie Coyle. He earned his only Oscar nomination for The Story of G.I. Joe.

The Mitchums had three children; sons James and Robin and daughter Patrine. They lived in Maryland during the early 1960’s and moved to Santa Barbara in 1977. Robert Mitchum died in 1997 following a battle with lung cancer and emphysema. He was 79.

The Mitchum family is asking that donations be made to the Salvation Army in her honor.
