Ebola outbreak spreads, kills at least 100 in West Africa

The deadly Ebola virus has spread to a city with a population of 2 million in West Africa and has killed at least 100 people.

According to NBC News, health officials have said that the virus has spread to Guinea’s capital city of Conakry. The outbreak is the largest known in an urban area.

CNN noted that officials are hoping now that the disease has gone “viral,” that it does not go global.

CBS News reported that as of late last week, the number of suspected Ebola cases in Guinea was up to 158. There were also 25 reported cases in neighboring Liberia, including 12 deaths.

There is no known cure for the disease. It is spread by personal contact, therefore if infected, an isolation period is necessary.

The virus occurs in humans and primates and kills 60 to 90 percent of its victims. Some of the symptoms include arthritis, chills, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and internal as well as external bleeding.
