A former NYPD officer has been taken into custody for fatally shooting his wife.
According to the New York Daily News, Kevin Canty, 43, a former police officer living in Jamaica, Queens, shot his 40-year-old wife, who has yet to be identified, in front of their two young children.
Emergency responders were called and the woman was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, but she could not be saved.
According to the New York Post, neighbors of the couple were intimated by Canty, who retired from the NYPD last year with a disability.
“They were not a happy couple. They fight all the time on the block. I guess it was inevitable,” Joanne Bagley, 52, told the Post.
Following the shooting, a neighbor took the couple’s children, a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old, to a local deli where the deli owner heard them say that their father shot their mother.
After a short while, the children were put into an ambulance.
Canty is currently in police custody.
