The Friday box office, which was buoyed by most schools being out for the day, saw holdovers continue to dominate, while Heaven Is For Real surprised and Transcendence fell on its face.
The top movie for the weekend, will almost certainly be Captain America: The Winter Soldier after it topped the Friday box office with $9.57 million, reports Forbes. The film is projected to earn about $24 million on the weekend. The Marvel sequel has done well three weeks into release and will likely pass the $200 million mark by the end of the weekend.
The only real challenger for the top spot is last weekend's No. 2, 20th Century Fox's animated Rio 2, which earned $9.2 million on Friday. The film is expected to earn close to $23 million, or more.
The surprising, new Sony film Heaven Is For Real, starring Greg Kinnear, snagged $7.85 million on Friday. The religious-based film actually opened on Wednesday where it earned $3.7 million. During the film's three days of release, it has earned $14.84 million and is projected to earn north of $26 million spread across five days.
According to Deadline, the major release of the weekend, Warner Bros. Transcendence, flopped after garnering bad reviews. The film earned $4.8 million for Friday and might be able to earn a little over $11 million for the weekend.
New film A Haunted House 2 earned $3.6 million, which is almost half what the first film earned in its first day of release. The movie is projected to earn about $9 million for the weekend.
The other new film on the weekend was Disney's Bears, narrated by John C. Reilly. The film $2.31 million and likely won't compete much at the box office, maybe earning $5 million.
