Internet fans were able to have their say regarding their favorite companies offering sites or services online. Google and the crowdfunding site Kickstarter are among the winners for this year’s Webby Awards.
The Webby Awards honor Internet achievement. The awards began two years ago as a way to honor “excellence on the Internet,” according to Mashable. Internet users from more than 200 countries choose the Webby Awards.
The awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. The Academy is made up of a group of about 1,000 Web experts and Internet professionals. For each Webby, there are two votes – one from industry, one from fans. There is an award from the academy and a “people’s voice” award, according to the Associated Press. This year, about 500,000 people voted.
Webby Awards were given out for Best Social Game, Best Use of Mobile, Best User Experience, and Best Community Website. Harvard Law professor Lawrence Lessig, who co-founded Creative Commons, won a lifetime achievement award. Tumblr founder David Karp and House of Cards actor Kevin Spacey served as judges this year.
