Calling all fans of 1985’s The Goonies - director Richard Donner has confirmed that a sequel is in the works.
Donner spoke with TMZ and confirmed they’re working on a sequel to the ’80s cult classic and he hopes to bring back Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Sean Astin and Jeff Cohen.
He was asked which members of the original cast would return and he responded, “Hopefully all of them.”
The actors have taken different paths since their Goonies days, with Brolin and Astin continuing as working actors and Feldman becoming more of a reality star and singer. Cohen has taken a different path entirely, becoming an entertainment lawyer, The Guardian reports.
Donner also directs the Superman and Lethal Weapon films. Steven Spielberg produced The Goonies but it’s unclear if he’s involved in the new project.
Some may think Donner confirming a Goonies sequel is old news, as he’s talked about it often throughout the years. In 2010, he said it wouldn’t happen but in 2011 he said they were working on a Broadway play based on the film.
The Huffington Post reports by 2012, he told IGN that a follow-up film will be happening. “I'm 1000 percent certain there will be a sequel,” he said. “I will bet my children on it."
