A new production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is slated to star a one-of-a-kind line-up of music stars from the punk era, pop and boy bands. It could be the only time to ever see the Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten and *NSYNC’s JC Chasez on the same stage.
In addition to Chasez and John Lydon (Rotten), the cast will include Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams, Incubus singer Brandon Boyd and newcomer Ben Forster as Jesus, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Forster won the role by coming out on top in Lloyd Webber’s U.K. show Superstar.
Williams was cast as Mary Magdalene, Lydon as King Herod, Poyd is Judas Iscariot and Chasez will play Pontius Pilate.
The 50-date arena tour will begin on June 9 in New Orleans, with Michael Cohl (Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark) among the producers. It will be the largest tour in the show’s 43-year history and wraps up on Aug. 16 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
“Jesus Christ Superstar began life as a rock album,” Lloyd Webber said in a statement, reports Rolling Stone. “Of course, JCS subsequently became a legit theatre stalwart, but I, personally, have always hankered after seeing it again in the arenas where it started.”
