Mortdecai, which Lionsgate hopes will launch a new franchise with Johnny Depp, has been scheduled for release in February. The film is based on Kyril Bonfiglioli’s novels and recently completed filming earlier this year.
Depp’s co-stars include Jeff Goldblum and Parks and Recreation actress Aubrey Plaza. Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Olivia Munn round out the star-studded cast.
In the film, Depp plays the title character, who is searching for a painting that may hold the secrets to hidden Nazi treasure. David Koepp directed and co-wrote the script with Eric Aronson and Peter Baynham, reports Variety. Depp produced with Christi Dembrowski and Andrew Lazar.
Infinitum Nihil, Mad Chance and OddLot Entertainment produced the film, which is the first under a long-term deal between OddLot and Lionsgate.
In February, Lionsgate Chairman Jon Feltheimer said that Depp enjoyed playing the character, which he called a “franchisable character.”
Mortdecai opens on Feb. 6, 2015. Hopefully for Depp, it will reverse his fortunes after Transcendence made just $11 million last weekend.
