Eddie Redmayne became a star thanks to his major role in Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables adaptation and the two are poised to work together again. The two are set to make The Danish Girl next.
Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are also working with Hooper again for this project, reports Deadline. It is inspired by a novel written by David Ebershoff and centers on Danish painter Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda. Wegener became the first man to have a sex-change operation and later became known as Lili Elbe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the book was adapted by Lucinda Coxon.
Hooper told THR that he first read Coxon’s script while making The King’s Speech in 2010. That film won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Several directors have been attached in the past, along with actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron, but the film stalled.
Redmayne will play Wegener, likely giving the actor his toughest role yet. The British actor has also appeared in My Week with Marilyn, The Other Boleyn Girl and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. He played Marius in Les Miserables and will next be seen in Jupiter Ascending.
