The family of a Detroit man, who was beaten by a mob of at least 10 people after accidentally hitting a 10-year-old boy with his truck, is looking for answers.
Steve Utash, 54, hit a boy with his pickup truck on Wednesday, after the boy abruptly stepped off the curb. He stopped to check on the boy, when he was approached by 10-12 “juveniles” who brutally attacked him, according to NBC.
“He’s never been in any trouble his entire life. He always helped everyone in need,” his son, Joe Utash said to The Detroit Free Press.
“They said he was saying, ‘Sorry, sorry.’ Why would you do that to him? He stopped. He tried to help. To see him be surrounded by all of those people and to see all those people coming after him, it’s completely unfair.”
Officials say that the accident was unavoidable, as stopping the truck would have been nearly impossible for Utash.
The boy suffered a broken leg and was released from the hospital. Utash suffered multiple head injuries and remains in a coma. His family says he was almost unrecognizable after the attack.
“It’s hard to see him like that,” Utash’s daughter, Felicia said. “We’re all still like, is that our Dad? It’s hard to see him laying in the bed, not knowing where he is.”
According to The Blaze, two teenagers, ages 16 and 17, were arrested on Sunday morning in connection to the attack.
