Duke assistant head coach Steve Wojciechowski has been hired by Marquette to be their new men’s basketball head coach. The hiring will be announced at a press conference on Tuesday.
Wojciechowski played for Duke from 1994 to 1998. He was the national defensive player of the year in 1998. Duke had a 74-26 record during his final three years of playing. He has been on Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s staff since 1999. He was on the Duke staff when they won national championships in 2001 and 2010. In 2008 he became Duke’s assistant head coach. Wojciechowski is the 12th former Krzyzewski player or assistant to become head coach at a Division I school, according to USA Today.
"I come from an environment where the expectation is to win, and that is why I chose Marquette," Wojciechowski said in a statement, ESPN notes. "I am particularly impressed with Marquette's investment in men's basketball and I'm thrilled to join an institution with so much rich history in both basketball and academic excellence. Having been a student-athlete, I know first-hand what it takes to succeed both on and off the court, and I bring tremendous passion when it comes to shaping our players into successful athletes and men."
Buzz Williams is the coach that Wojciechowski replaces at Marquette. Williams left Marquette for Virginia Tech last month. Marquette finished this season with a 17-15 record and saw their eight-year run of NCAA tournament appearances come to an end. In six seasons with Marquette Williams had a 139-69 record and five NCAA tournament appearances, according to the Associated Press.
Wojciechowski has never been a head coach at any level. Despite that fact Krzyzewski has said that he has considered him as a head coach. It will be interesting to see how Wojciechowski does in his first season as a head coach.
