The Flaming Lips have released information to the public about their companion album to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. It seems that Funny or Die worked with Flaming Side of the Moon to be a part of an extravagant April Fool’s Day joke.
The Album is in fact real, but in the Funny or Die video, you can watch the band record the album and watch frontman Wayne Coyne discuss how they’ve “sold out” as a band, according to Stereogum.
In one video, the band comes together around a table to discuss the next steps with a slimy, fake record executive played by Jon Daly. The producers advice is to "Stop thinking of this as a band, and start thinking of this as abrand." Daly turns the Flaming Lips into a marketing technique, but putting their name on ChapStick and E-cigarettes.
Coyne then realizes he needs to take a reprieve from his band when Fred Armisen swoops in the fill his position as frontman. Armisen comes equipped with big plans for the Flaming Lips and takes the group through a whirlwind of genres that could revolutionize their sound—such as Krautrock, two-tone ska and “Coldplay,” but Coyne remains unimpressed as reported by Rolling Stone.
The Flaming Lips won’t be leaving the spotlight any time soon. The band will release two albums on Record Store Day and Coyne recently posted pictures recording with Miley Cyrus, working on a cover of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” by The Beatles. It’s said that the whole Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band will be covered by the Lips with help from Cyrus, Tame Impala and MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden.
