Meryl Streep is set to star in Ricki and the Flash, a Rock ‘n’ Roll project scripted by Diablo Cody and directed by Jonathan Demme. The package drew interest from various studios, but Tim Rothman’s TriStar Productions won out.

Marc Platt and Mason Novick are producing and Rothman is committed to making the project, reports Deadline. In the story from Cody (Juno), Streep would play a woman who became estranged from her family as she pursued a dream in music. She’ll get one chance to reconnect with her daughter, though.

Rothman said in a statement to TheWrap that he is looking forward to working with the talent involved for the first time. “I have been fortunate enough to have personally worked with each of the Fab Four talents involved here before and know well how supremely gifted they are,” he said. “This is a great day in the life of our company.”

Universal, Fox and the Weinstein Company were reportedly interested in the project.

Demme is best known for directing The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, but he also helmed several Neil Young documentaries and Stop Making Sense.
