The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is taking precautions to ensure more safety on the road. A rule was proposed Monday by the administration requiring all new light vehicles to have backup cameras.

The rule would involve cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans if it is passed according to USA Today. If the rule passes it will be final in 60 days and begin to start phasing in on models in approximately two years on May 1, 2016. By May 1, 2018, all new models would require the “rear-view visibility systems.”

With the new cameras, drivers would have a view of 10 feet by 20 feet behind their vehicle, preventing backup accidents.

The proposed ruling comes after a recent cry from families and consumer groups who have become victim to back-up accidents and as a result have lost loved ones.

Most recently reported the NHTSA released a document showing the possible fire risk for Honda Odysseys due to a faulty fuel pump strainer cover. Almost 900,000 vans were recalled due to the problem.
