The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays today, 6-1, in front of a packed house at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada. The win moves the Yanks to .500 with a 3-3 record, and the Jays fall to 3-4 in the AL East. New York took two out of three in Toronto after the rubber-game today.

Finally, the Bronx-Bombers can now live up to their power-nickname given to them nearly a century ago. In the top of the fourth inning, Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner hit a two-run home-run off of Jay’s starter Drew Hutchinson, who took the loss. Remarkably, this marked the Yankees first homer of the 2014 campaign (sixth game), according to gammonsdaily.com .

It was a complete team effort offensively as 2B Brian Roberts was the only New York starter to not get in the hit column. 3B Yangervis Solarte received the start at 3B and continued his hot hitting as he drove in a run on a ground-rule double in the fourth.

Yankees ace lefty C.C. Sabathia started out masterfully. A great sign after his struggles on opening day. Then the sixth inning came where Sabathia gave up three runs, all with two outs. The final line for C.C. was six innings, seven hits, four earned runs and six strikeouts as he earned the win. Not spectacular, but an improvement considering his first outing.

The Yankees bullpen did the rest. Adam Warren and Shawn Kelly only surrendered one hit combined in two innings (Encarnacion triple in the eighth). Yankees Closer David Robertson came on in the ninth and earned his second save of the season, despite it being drama-filled. Brett Lawrie hit a base-knock with one out and Adam Lind was walked. However Robertson prevailed by popping-up Colby Rasmus and retiring the hot-hitting Melky Cabrera on a line-drive to right-field.

Another note from this one was Derek Jeter passing Hall Of Famer Paul Molitor for eighth on the MLB all-time hit list. He tied Molitor in the second inning as he blasted a line-drive to right field; and then passed him on his next at-bat as he squeezed one by Blue Jays 1B Edwin Encarnacion.

With those two hits today, Jeter now has 3,320 career hits ranking him #8 on the MLB’s all-time list, notes nj.com .

The Yanks will now go home to take on the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game set, including their home-opener tomorrow afternoon.
