An NYPD detective has been arrested for shooting his partner and driving while intoxicated.
According to The New York Daily News, on Thursday evening, Police Detective Jay Poggi, 58, a 31-year veteran, and his partner Detective Matthew Sullivan, a 12-year veteran, left their precinct with the intent of investigating a robbery. While out, they visited an establishment that served alcoholic beverages and it was there that authorities believe he consumed a considerable amount of alcohol.
During the night Detective Poggi pulled out his gun, an older model, to show it to Detective Sullivan. While he was showing his partner the gun, it went off and a bullet struck Sullivan’s right wrist.
According to CBS New York, Poggi drove Sullivan to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center while under the influence.
When a police lieutenant arrived, he noticed Poggi’s bloodshot eyes and performed a field sobriety test, which is required in cases when officers discharge their guns.
The sobriety test revealed Poggi’s blood-alcohol content to be 0.113. The legal driving limit in New York is 0.08.
Sullivan underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition.
Poggi was reportedly weeks away from retiring and could now be fired.
A judge released him without bail. He is do in court June 16.
