San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, former home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, and now former home of San Francisco’s 49ers, will soon be demolished. The Beatles played their last paid concert at the historic sports stadium so it only seemed fitting that Paul McCartney play the last concert event at the park.

According to The Hollywood Reporter McCartney will play on August 14 at Candlestick Park, with the venue beating out the 49er’s new home, Levi’s Stadium, who tried to lure McCartney to play the first concert in the new stadium.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee invited McCartney to close out the “Stick” but, unfortunately, the concert itself had become somewhat of a negotiations-war with the new Santa Clara stadium trying to entice McCartney to play there. Reports have said San Francisco’s persistence helped seal the deal.

Along with baseball and football games, Candlestick Park has hosted a variety of other events including The Rolling Stones 1981 Farewell Tour, Pope John Paul II’s visit where he held mass before 70,000 people, and this year in May, will host the US Men’s soccer team playing against Azerbaijan on their journey to the World Cup this summer.
