Star Pharrell Williams cried tears of joy during a one-on-one interview Sunday with Oprah Winfrey over the global impact of his single “Happy.”
According to US Magazine, the 41 year old singer/songwriter/producer appeared on an episode of Oprah Prime to discuss his career, during which the two discussed the instantaneous success of his hit song “Happy” made for the film Despicable Me 2.
Pharrell told Oprah, “Zero airplay. Nothing. And the next thing you know, we put out the video on November 21, and all of a sudden...boom. I mean, when I say boom, I mean boooom. And we were like, 'What's happening?' First of all, people are putting up their own videos. It was, like, no longer my song."
Afterwards, Oprah played a montage of people from all over the globe that submitted their own versions of “Happy,” prompting the Grammy award winning artist to tears. Daily News reports that the 60 year old host later tweeted, “Thank you @Pharrell that was one of my all time favorite interviews ever. You all now can see why , right? #OprahPrime.”
“Happy” went on to receive an Oscar nomination, and is featured on Pharrell’s newest album G I R L.
.@Oprah You can't imagine what this means coming from you, a rare force. So radiant.
