While attending a party near the campus of the University of Calgary, the son of a policeman stabbed and killed five people.
Police identified the murderer as 23-year-old Matthew de Grood, the son of a veteran officer, and said he is expected to be charged on five counts of first-degree murder, reports CBC News. Calgary Police Services Chief Rick Hanson said, "This is the worst mass murder in Calgary's history."
The other students were celebrating the end of classes at the university on Tuesday when de Grood showed up. "The suspect arrived at the party, obtained a large knife and targeted the victims one by one, stabbing them," Hanson revealed at a news conference.
Officers were able to track de Grood down with the help of the K-9 unit. After his capture, he had to be taken to the hospital for a dog bite.
BBC News notes that three victims, all male, were dead in the house by the time police arrived. A fourth male and a female were transported to the local hospital, but neither survived their wounds.
Hanson told reporters, "The scene was horrific."
CBC notes that it doesn't appear de Grood was on any legal or illicit substances when he left work and went straight to the party. He also has never had any past run-ins with authorities.
