Powdered alcohol has been approved to be sold in the US and may even be available to buy by the end of this year. It will be able to be mixed into drinks or sprinkled on food.
Telegraph has revealed that the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau have approved a new brand of powdered alcohol, called Palcohol. This past week, they signed off on seven different kinds of Palcohol. These seven kinds include flavors like Margarita and Cosmopolitan.
Palcohol will be available during autumn of this year and the company’s website, which has changed drastically since it’s been approved, believes this product will be a solution to the high costs of liquid alcohol.
The product is being promoted by a statement that says, “What’s worse than going to a concert, sporting event, etc. and having to pay $10, $15, #20 for a mixed drink with tax and tip. Are you kidding me?! Take Palcohol into the venue and enjoy a mixed drink for a fraction of the cost.”
When it comes to using Palcohol and food, the site suggest that people sprinkle it straight onto their food after it has been cooked to give in an extra kick. “Some of our favorites are the Kamikaze in guacamole, Rum on a BBQ sandwich, Cosmo on a salad and Vodka on eggs in the morning to start your day off right.” They believe experimentation will make this product a huge. If you add it before the dish is cooked, the alcohol will burn off and that will defeat the entire purpose.
The original idea caused some controversy, and people were concerned that there would be legal issues involved, so the original website was removed. Patent lawyer Daniel Chrisopherson wrote on the Bevlog beverage blog that, “My expectation is that the patentability of Palcohol is very narrow and a patent will not be effective at keeping competitors at bay.”
Powdered alcohols, and similar products, are already sold in Japan and Germany. It may be new to the US, but it has been the subject of several US patents before. The website is not complete, as they had an overwhelming amount of people visiting, and more information will be coming.
