What happens to Greyhound dogs after their racing years?
Greyhounds are known for their speed and are used for racing. Their long, powerful legs and slender build lets them reach a speed over 40 mph, stated Red Orbit.
According to the National Greyhound Adoption Program (NGAP), Greyhounds only race until they are about two years old yet live to be up to 15 years old. Hence, adoption programs for the dogs help them to find a family after they retire.
Animal Planet’s dog breed guide stated that the Greyhound is quiet, calm and extremely well-mannered. The NGAP added that the dog breed is docile and tolerant and makes the best pet for children who do not wish to engage in boisterous play. Not to mention, they are a very low maintenance dog breed.
One pointer NGAP pointed out to prospective Greyhound owners is that because of the dogs’ fine hair and low percentage of body fat, they must live indoors and cannot be kept in a doghouse or garage as they are intolerant of extreme cold or heat.
The adoption process usually takes one to two weeks from the time your application is received by the adoption program, according to Greyhound adoption program which is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The full amount of the adoption fee is $260 dollars.
