Shortly before his critically acclaimed appearance on Saturday Night Live, R&B singer Sam Smith released a video for his single “Stay With Me” off of his upcoming debut album In the Lonely Hour.
The sweet melody throughout is captured well throughout the video, beginning with the sounds of the street, with Smith walking out of his house to start the largely performance video. Smith walks down the street singing, and we have glimpses of him singing alone in a room as well. Smith, much like Randy Jackson would say, takes us to church, but in the literal sense. A choir in a white interior joins Smith in the chorus singing the title.
Sweeping melodies throughout, with violins and piano taking the lead, gives Smith plenty of room to show off his vocal range. His voice gives a very thick, almost brooding, sound with playful falsetto accenting lines. With the choir singing staccato to his softer voice, Smith shows off with some vocal runs as well.
“Stay With Me” is Smith’s fourth single off of his upcoming major label debut In the Lonely Hour. Having already won the Critic’s Choice at this year’s Brit Awards, and BBC’s “Sound of 2014”, Smith is set for superstardom. In the Lonely Hour is scheduled to be released on May 26 on Capitol Records.
