A kindhearted senior citizen returned to the Utah restaurant where he dined and dashed 70 years ago.
According to The New York Daily News, on April 1 the man, whose name has not been released, returned to the Lamb’s Grill in Utah for the first time since 1941 to pay a bill that he could not afford when he was 10-years-old. Despite the time that has passed, he was too embarrassed to go into the restaurant himself and instead asked his daughter to take care of the tab.
"She starts in and says, 'My father ... ' so my mind wanders and I think, 'What's going to happen next?' Next, she says, '(He) dined and dashed here in 1941," waitress Jasmine Back recounted to KSL.
The bill was for $1.
In 1941, the man and his friend ate at the restaurant, but when the bill came, they realized they couldn’t pay it and ran away.
The man’s daughter gave Back $5 to make up for dine and dashing all those years ago and Back gave the money to Francis Liong, who now owns the Lamb’s Grill.
Liong said he would be sending the money to the restaurant’s previous owners.
"The $5 don't belong to me. It belongs to the previous owners, back then. So I need to pay it back," Liong said.
Liong also said he forgave the man and said he’s welcome back at the Lamb’s Grill.
“But don’t dash out,” he said.
