Singer Shakira recently came under fire for commenting that her husband, soccer player Gerard Pique, is "territorial" about her and had to take to her Facebook page to correct the mistake.
In an interview with Billboard promoting her new album, Shakira spoke at length about her relationship with husband Gerard Pique, who she has been with since 2010. Shakira remarked that Pique is "territorial" and "since he no longer lets me do videos with men, well, I have to do them with women,” referring to her recent "Can't Remember To Forget You" video with Rihanna. “It’s more than implied in our relationship that I can’t do videos like I used to. It’s out of the question – which I like, by the way. I like that he protects his turf and he values me, in a way that the only person that he would ever let graze my thigh would be Rihanna," she continued. Not surprisingly, many jumped to criticize the couple's relationship and Pique's control over Shakira's career. The two have a one-year-old son, Milan.
To defend her husband, Shakira took to her personal Facebook page Thursday afternoon. "For the record, I was being humorous and now I see that some press took it very literally! The reality is that we have a beautiful relationship of mutual trust, and jealousy has never been an issue on either side," she wrote, before going on to say that in the future she plans to use more discretion when joking with reporters. True to her bilingual nature, the singer posted the message in both Spanish and English so fans across to globe could understand what she wrote.
