A giant sinkhole that was thought to be plugged up over the weekend is reopening in a Florida retirement community.

According to The New York Daily News, the obvious trouble began in January when the ground outside a home in The Villages, Florida began to show abnormalities. However, the depth of the issue went unrealized until the ground collapsed Saturday, revealing a giant hole.

Helicon Properties, a private contractor, came and filled the hole with cement and residents were relieved, thinking all was well until three days later when a passerby noticed the hole opening again.

According to The Associated Press, by Tuesday the hole had opened up again and by Wednesday morning, it had expanded by six to ten feet.

When the hole was tended too over the past weekend, crews had been working on it for about three weeks, but no one noticed just how severe the problem was until the ground collapsed. Residents are taking precaution in the event that an evacuation is ordered.

"We don't know if we are going to have to go or what," said resident Rich Corr, who has stated that he and his wife have both packed their bags.

Contractors will continue to fill the hole with dirt and cement in the event that it continues to grow.
