South Sudan deploys army after attack on UN base kills dozens

South Sudan deployed an army to guard a U.N. base after an attack killed dozens of people on Thursday.

According to CNN, U.N. spokesman Joseph Contreras said at least 48 people were killed in the attack at the peacekeepers' base in Bor, the capital of Jonglei state.

The militants used grenades to breach the compound, Contreras said. How the attack ended is unclear.

In addition to those killed, another 60 were wounded.

"The army has come in now. They have been ordered to protect UNMISS so there will be no attack from anybody," President Salva Kiir's spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny, told Reuters.

South Sudan’s conflict has displaced more than a million people who were forced to leave their homes when the fighting started in December. The violence has since escalated and disrupted oil production, which is the country's main source of revenue.

At this time, no one has been arrested in connection with the attack. Officials have said that an investigation is underway.
