Steven Spielberg has plenty of options on the table for his follow-up to Lincoln. Now, we can add The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara to the list. The religious drama will be adapted by Tony Kushner, who also wrote Lincoln and Munich. Spielberg will at least produce and may also direct.
David Kertzer’s non-fiction novel centers on an Italian Jew who was taken from his family in 1858 and raised Catholic. He would eventually become a priest in the Augustinian order. According to sources for Variety, Kushner is in the very early stages of writing, meaning that this might not actually be Spielberg’s next project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project will be a co-production between The Weinstein Company and Spielberg’s Dreamworks.
Spielberg’s other possible next projects include Robopocalypse, which is set up at Fox, and an Aztec drama from writer Steve Zaillian called Moctezuma.
Robopocalypse, which has been on hold for over a year, is the best bet for Spielberg’s next film, as Variety’s sources say that the budget is almost set. Chris Hemsworth is still set to star, although he’s currently working on Avengers: Age of Ultron.
