The plays Chimerica and The Book of Mormon won the two highest honors at London's Laurence Olivier Awards last night.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Lucy Kirkwood's Chimerica received the award for best new play. It tells the story of the photographer who took the famous 'tank man' image from Beijing's Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.
The Book of Mormon received the awards for best new musical and best actor in a musical for Gavin Creel's role as Elder Kevin Price. The production also won best theatre choreographer and best performance in a supporting role in a musical for Stephen Ashfield's performance as Elder McKinley.
The musical tells a satirical story of Latter-Day Saints missionaries who are forced to confront their faith during a trip to Africa in the trademark irreverent style of writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who are best known as the co-creators of South Park. It is currently on tour across the United States.
The LA Times also reports that London's Almeida Theatre won best revival of a play for its portrayal of Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts, in which Lesley Manville was chosen over Judy Dench for best lead actress in a play.
