Universal has hired Transcendence writer Jack Paglen to write their long-gestating Battlestar Galactica reboot.

Empire reported that this new adaptation will be a complete reimagining of the series. Original series creator Glen Larson is onboard to produce the new film.

The project has been rumored since 2009, as Variety noted that Bryan Singer was supposedly set to direct the film.

The original Battlestar Galactica first aired in 1978. Following the one-season run, the spinoff series Galactica 1980 aired in, naturally, 1980. It also lasted a single season.

The most recent iteration of Battlestar Galactica was the Ronald Moore-developed 2004 SyFy (then Sci-Fi) series. Starting from a 2003 miniseries, Moore’s Battlestar Galactica starred Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and Katee Sackhoff. An allegory for the war on terror, the series is listed under Time’s All-Time 100 TV shows. After four seasons, two spin-off series followed in its wake: Caprica and Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.

Paglen has also been hired to write Ridley Scott’s sequel to Prometheus.
