New York Yankees starter Michael Pineda was ejected from Wednesday night's game against the Boston Red Sox after being found using pine tar.
According to USA Today, it was believed Pineda was using pine tar the last time the two teams squared off. This time the pitcher was actually caught after Red Sox Manager John Farrell asked the home-plate umpire, Gerry Davis, to look for a foreign substance during the game.
After examining Pineda's hand, glove and baseball, Davis wiped his finger across the back of the pitcher's neck and then had him tossed.
The Boston Herald reports that Yankees manager Joe Girardi stalked out of the dugout to argue the ejection, but didn't have any luck and turned around. Back in the dugout.
Before the game, Farrell was asked if he would be watching Pineda for pine tar use. "I would expect that, if it's used, it's more discreet than last time."
The Yankees starter could now be suspended for 10 games. Pineda is 2-1 so far this season, with a 1.00 ERA.
