Major League Baseball announced on Thursday that Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has been suspended for 10 days after being found with pine tar.
The starter was discovered to have been using pine tar while pitching on Wednesday night in the Yankees' game against the Boston Red Sox, reports USA Today. Following the game, he apologized to his team.
"I apologize to my teammates, and to everybody," he said. "I'll learn from this mistake. It won't happen again."
Pineda can appeal the suspension, but likely wouldn't win as he admitted to using the substance on Wednesday night. He can return for the May 5 game against the Los Angeles Angels.
"He used poor judgment tonight," Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said. "He'll admit to that, but you can look at everybody in that room, we have not always made the best decisions in our life. You learn from them."
As previously reported, Pineda was ejected early into the game against the Red Sox after Boston Manager John Farrell called on home-plate umpire Gerry Davis to inspect Pineda.
Davis looked at Pineda's glove, baseball and hand before inspecting the pitcher's neck and finding the pine tar.
Farrell admitted before the game he would watch for use of pine tar after a previous meeting between the teams where Pineda was accused of using pine tar. The Red Sox that time declined on filing a complaint.
