It seems that spiders, particularly yellow sac spiders, are to blame for Mazda’s second recall since 2011.
According to CNN, the automaker notified federal officials on Thursday that it would be recalling 42,000 vehicles because of a fire risk tied to the creepy crawlers.
Mazda issued the recall on all 2010, 2011 and 2012 Mazda6 sedans with 2.4-liter engines in the U.S.
NJ.com noted that auto analysts have said that the yellow sac spiders crawl into a vent line because it likes the smell of gasoline and builds a web which blocks the line.
The web build-up in the emission systems could lead to fuel tank cracks and possible leaks.
The previous recall had the same culprit behind it, so Mazda designed a special spring to prevent the spiders from getting in. However, some of the arachnids attracted to the hydrocarbons in gasoline still found a way in. A software fix was then designed to alleviate pressure on the fuel tank and prevent it from cracking.
The company said there are no similar problems with any other car and the spring and software is installed on all newer Mazda6 sedan models.
