After weeks of rumors and speculation, Star Trek: Into Darkness screenwriter Roberto Orci has been confirmed as the director of the untitled third Star Trek film.
After J.J Abrams left the project for a galaxy far, far away, the future seemed unsure for the franchise. Many directors were rumored to be interested in the project, most notably Joe Cornish.
Orci recently parted ways with his longtime writing partner Alex Kurtzman whom he worked with on Into Darkness. Paramount also brought on screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to support the development of the third film.
We reported a few days ago that Orci and Paramount began discussions after he had campaigned heavily for the director’s chair. It seems the crew of the Enterprise will be joining him in his directing debut according to Variety.
The franchise will undoubtedly be heading in a different direction in the wake of all the creative shifts. One might say that it will boldly go where no Star Trek film has gone before…
