Memorial Day weekend at the box office saw the latest film in the X-Men franchise dominate the weekend and claim the number one spot from last week’s leader Godzilla. X-Men: Days of Future Past opened with a $91 million opening weekend, which gives this movie the number four opening weekend, just behind The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which opened with $91 million.

The four-day holiday weekend should be promising for the film, which is expected to bring in $110 million throughout the first four days of the film’s released reports The Huffington Post. This total will give the film the fifth highest Memorial Day opening weekend falling just behind the $117 million brought in from last year’s Fast and Furious 6.

Days of Future Past recored the second highest opening in the history of the X-Men franchise. The leader is X-Men: The Last Stand which was released over Memorial Day weekend back in 2006 and brought in $123 million.

It is interesting to note that the film did not suffer due to the recent bad press involving director Bryan Singer and allegations of sexual assault reports FOX News. These allegations are the reason that Singer dropped out of doing any press for the film. Singer did this because he did not want the issues with him to have an negative effect on the film.

May has been a strong month at the box office and X-Men: Days of Future Past is the third film this month to have an opening weekend of over $90 million. It will be interesting to see when the latest X-Men film will be dethroned from the number one spot at the box office.
