For years, director Alfonso Cuaron has earned tons of praise in the film community for his acclaimed films. But it wasn't until he directed last year's Gravity that he finally seemed to earned the respect of general audiences and, apparently, Hollywood executives as well, as he has reportedly offered a number of projects, including The Shining prequel The Overlook Hotel.
According to Schmoes Knows, they have spoken to "two close sources with knowledge on the project" at Warner Bros. who told the blog that Cuaron is their top choice for the film. Should he want it, the project is his.
What is most interesting about this news is that it comes mere days after the rumor that Warner Bros. also reportedly offered him the chance to direct the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, which he was said to be "deep in talks" to make.
Considering that Warner Bros. is the studio who distributed Gravity and, therefore, received the benefits of that movie's immense success, it is natural that they would be very high on the director's capabilities behind the camera.
The Overlook Hotel has been in the works for at least a couple years. Set to produce the movie is James Vanderbilt (Zodiac), Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Bradley Fischer (Black Swan). The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara has been signed on to write the movie since last year.
All that is known about the movie is that the events inside it will take place before the original, based on the book by Stephen King. What project, if any, that Cuaron will pick—if any—will have to be determined in, hopefully, the near future.
