Scientists have announced a meteor shower will take place beginning Friday evening that will prove to be stunning.
The meteor shower is expected to begin around 2 a.m. Saturday morning with anywhere from 200 to over 1,000 meteors falling per hour.
According to Sean Morris, one of the meteorologist from CNN , the meteor shower is special because it is a new one, which is a rare spotting. “New meteor showers don't come along that often. It'll be the first time in a generation that a new meteor shower will show up”, he stated.
Scientists from NASA believe that North America will be the region that will be able to view the shower the best since it will fall during night hours. However, the absolute best places to watch will be California and places east of the Mississippi river.
Comet 209p/Linear is the comet responsible for the amazing shower. The comet typically orbits the sun but every five years it comes into contact with the earth’s orbit.
Comet 209p is the 9th closest comet fly by to ever be seen on a Friday. In order to actually see the comet and not just the shower, a high quality telescope recommended. Slooh will be offering a live stream of the comet from a telescope in the Canary Islands. For those who simply want to see the shower, Time will have a live stream on its website, Time noted.
The meteor shower will take place from 2 a.m. until 4 a.m. approximately.
