Disney's Maleficent was strong in the film's first full day on Friday, earning a respectable amount for a non-superhero flick at the box office, easily outpacing all other movies.

Disney's new take on Sleeping Beauty grossed $24.25 million, with $4.2 million of that coming from Thursday night previews. Maleficent is projected to earn about $65 million at the box office for the weekend, reports Forbes, though the film has the potential to overperform and possibly reach past $70 million.

Should the $180 million film perform at the box office just to expectations, it would be the best opening weekend for Angelina Jolie, blowing past the $50 million Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Wanted earned.

With the top spot at the weekend box office already sewn up, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the weekend will shake out. X-Men: Days of Future Past will almost certainly be No. 2 after earning $9.5 million, according to Deadline. For its second weekend, the superhero film is projected to earn $32 million.

The other new release of the weekend is the R-rated disappointment, A Million Ways to Die in the West, which managed a lackluster $6.1 million on Friday. The $40 million Seth Macfarlane-led Western comedy will likely gross about $17 million.

Godzilla earned $3.3 million on Friday, which is good enough for fourth place. The Warner Bros. film could earn another $11 million for the weekend. Adam Sandler's flop Blended grossed another $2.37 million for Friday and could possibly gross $8.2 million, rounding out the top five.
